Wait now, wait . . . there must be some redeeming qualities to the man (although, him being involved in stamps in any way gives him a boost up in my eyes, that's for sure).

Is there a love story involved or anything? Queen Mary?

Did he have dogs (Corgis) like Queen Elizabeth II does? Cats? Gerbils? Horses? A King must have had horses for goodness sakes. Armies, navies, etc. Castles, lands, estates. I suppose a few stamps here and there would tend to get lost amongst the mass of other distractions.

But it's wonderful that he was interested in stamps and fine engraved work and all. Too bad there weren't more stamps of his Queen or the Royal family or even the gardens or horses or ships. Gerbils don't rate stamps I suppose. Royal gerbils? Royal cat food I suppose.

Sigh. I think I must read up on the King now. I hardly know anything about him other than his stamps.

Thanks Philb for starting the thread and giving me the opportunity to become interested in the history and personality behind a lot of stamps that I do like.

So many great threads around at present, and I just haven't had the time to contribute much. Another great one, thanks Philb and Bujutsu for the boost !

King George V was indeed the most avid of Philatelists/collectors, and spent much time studying. He purchased wisely at auction, often having to sell items from the collection to pay for them. Let us not forget that all members of the Royal family have money to spend ! KGV chose to spend his on stamps.
Let us also not forget that the King or Queen of Great Britain and the Commonwealth received stamps and First Day covers of all the new issues from each country, until the present day. In the time of KGV, that would have been many issues and some very nice stamps ! He also would have received Proof copies and Essays of many or most. These were not gifts as such, and I am sure there were many occasions when he had something to say about the designs !!
Parts of the Royal Collection can often be seen on display around the world. I was lucky enough to view some amazing items from The British Administration in Palestine, whilst at the Israel '98 International in Tel Aviv.
Some of the most rare items of the reign of KGV will be on display at London's Guildhall from May 7th as part of the Festival of Stamps, 2010. I will be going on the opening day and am looking forward to it immensely.

Londonbus1....God save the Queen.
