Lascarina Bouboubina
Few books of history contain any reference to Lascarina Bouboulina, whose likeness
adorns the 50 lepta stamps of the Greek Centenary series. Her claim to distinction lies
in the fact that she was the only woman admiral in history since Artemis, and in the
distinguished service that she rendered to her country in the war of Hellenic
independence. A native of the island of Spetzai, whence the best Greek sailors come,
she flew her flag on her own vessel, the armed merchant brig "Agamemnon,"
commanding a squadron in the Gulf of Nauplia in support of General Colocotroni's
force when he defeated the Turks at Dervenakia.
She met her death, not in action against the enemy, but at the hands of a jealous rival,
by whom she was shot through the head.
Bouboubina is regarded as the Greek Joan of Arc.
