Welcome, Stampgirl. You can get tons of great information here, but there are also some good websites out there that spend several pages on the basics. That is way more information than can be typed in a reply here. Then you can take that baseline of information and ask away here with clarifications and more details.

Maybe some of us can add links to good basic websites? The "Ask Phil" website is maintained by a group of serious collectors in Chicago, and it has lots of great information. There is a weekly stamp publication, Linn's, that has a website that collects hundreds (?...probably...I haven't counted) of articles called "Refresher Course" that are great for everyone. Stamp collecting offers something for everyone, and you can get as deep into it as you want. When I started out, it was tough to get information...it's a great time to be starting out.
