I am having serious trouble trying to identify the Machins printed with photogravure and differentiating the ones that are lithographed. What power magnifier is recommended?
Thanks in advance.

I think you could just get by with a 6x magnifier. Just barley and assuming your eyes are reasonable young. 10x would be better though. And, at 30x, its easy to see what's there.

The best place to see whether a Machin is gravured or lithographed is the value indicator, btw.

I recently bought the CD from Mayall. It was indeed 39GBP . It is quite a nice presentation, with a wealth of information. I must confess that being at my age, I am more comfortable with an actual book, but the CD is nice and not too difficult to navigate.

Rohumpy,

I have found that it helps to print out sections of the Mayall book. At least for these increasingly old eyes. And, I seem to concentrate better with the printed out page.

(I also found out that if you are enterprising, you can load the CD into an iPad. Makes using it at your stamp table a bit easier.)

I think two things are essential when you commence to collect what can be a complex area (whatever it may be): firstly, the best reference material you can find. If you develop a specialised collection, you will end up needing the best reference material you can find so you may as well buy it at the start. My experience with these monographs ise that if you end up not proceeding wth the collection you will get good money for the specialist reference material anyway. Secondly you need a fair range of material to sort and compare. Often you can struggle to identify stamps from one another until you can put 20 or 30 copies side by side for comparison. All of a sudden things are much clearer. I found ths sorting an accumulation of South African postage dues recently.
