Confederate States Scott #11 10c blue Jefferson Davis, no frame line, issued 1863-64, on cover.

This Confederate Cover is addressed to Capt[ain] Powhatan Ellis, [Jr.],
A[ssistant] A[djuvant] Gen[eral] to [Major] General Frank Gardner, Jackson Mifsifsippi (Mississippi).
The postmark is indistinct, but I believe this cover dates from 1864.

Captain Powhatan Ellis, Jr., Assistant Adjuvant General of the District Command at West Point, Mississippi,
is mentioned in George W. Cable's Recollections of the Civil War.

Captain Powhatan Ellis was presumably the son of Powhatan Ellis,
the US Senator from Mississippi and a decendant of Chief Powhatan, father of Pocahontas.

Major General Frank Gardner (shown below) is most famous as the commander
of the Confederate forces in The Battle of Port Hudson for control of the Mississippi River.
