Anyone know what this is? I Googled Vallay and it tried to tell me I meant "Valley". Otherwise it found an uninhabited island in Scotland. This item looks rather old to be one of Clive Feigenbaum's Fake Filatelic Fantasies...

Interesting you quote this fellows name.

I think your example, if postally inspired, is a rare item, and Scotland is the genesis of many a strange Island local, so would fit well.

I have over 50 pages of local and Cinderella producers names and it is not listed anywhere in that.
It may be just a one off philatelic gag, from one collector to another.

I have had all sorts on my mail, including the Wallmart Flag over Porch
I once sent a dozen or so, 1954 3.5d Black swans on mail, I cut and reversed the centres to give a modern "inverted frame"
None have turned up on message boards yet

A quick google search turned up an unpopulated island off the coast of Scotland.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vallay

Once had a population of 60, so perhaps local postage?

I forgot about that one. I will have to dig up the piece. But I am most inclined to believe it is a fantasy.

BeeSee I have just emailed the local history centre on Uist (closest inhabited island) to ask if Vallay ever had a local post. I'll let you know if I get a reply.

If these are as old as they certainly look to be, I'd be sceptical about Vallay, Scotland. The '5' denomination would be a rather awkward and expensive 5d, as opposed to the more 'natural' 3d or 6d. Then there's the use of 'mail': I'd have expected 'post' from a location in the British Isles. However, if US forces were ever stationed on Vallay, presumably during WWII, that might explain it - if these are from Vallay.

Interesting thoughts Tony,
sounds very reasonable.
Hope Stampgal gets a reply.
