OK, I need a history lesson. I agree whole heartedly, that the zeps are beautiful stamps. But, tell me, why are they sooooooo expensive? Are they all drawn by hand by special trained rhesus monkeys? Tell me, tell me, tell me. |

I wish I had the whole C13-15 set used-- I just have the 2 on cover-- thats 3 holes in my album when they were issued it was the height of the depression and no one had 65 cents let alone $2.65-- so 90 percent of Zeps were burned |

jamesw most of it is really supply and demand and the rest is made up of the short lived history of this type of air transportation. Reference Baron von Hindenburg, the "Hindenburg" and Lakehurst Naval Air Station, NJ. |

While I don't know the total history behind these stamps, I can offer some basic facts and an educated guess or two ...
1) They were expensive for the times. Max hit the nail on the head. It would have taken 2-3 weeks via normal postage to Germany (anyone know the rates at that time?) vs a Zeppelin flight that took a few days (It flew to South America along the way) but cost several times the standard postage.
2) The stamps were in issued then discontinued after a mere 2 months.
3) The Hindenburg disaster in 1937, along with political and economic issues, hastened the demise of the Zeppelin flights (copied from Wiki). So we know from this statement that the Zepps had a mere 7 year run in the US. (Editing this last line. By 7 year run, I speak of US postage being sent via Zeppelins. I believe that Germany was sending mail with their own Zepp postage prior to 1930)
There is lots of info available on the net about the history of Zeppelin postage. I just need to read it :)
