...by Henri Cheffer, engraver and painter.

(the only cheffer story on wiki was in French,
and Babelfish made a humurous and disjointed effort)

Saar:

After initial rejection, France finally accepted a Cheffer work,
the "Marianne Cheffer"
(with a very "mona Lisa" type smile imho)

Nice strip Revman, I passed on a similar strip
at a flea market about 5 years ago, IIRC $18.
I have not seen another one since.

Really? How much Tonya? These would fill a big gap.
I generally collect without gum, these have text on the back,
is that under the gum?
If so a FDC would suffice, otherwise the strip, as I would like to
capture the story.

I was a little wrong...my sheet is a tad different than rev's.

Here is my sheet and the two different cancel envelopes I have. (I have two each of the different envelopes.)

The printing on the back does appear to be under some very shiny glue.

Does $1.50 for the block of 20 and/or $2.00 per envelope sound okay? (Honestly, when I give you all prices, if it does not sound good, please tell me!)

Shipping to Australia would be around $2.50 I think.

Rod,
The printing is UNDER the Gum.
I have a Full sheet of these. But, I haven't a clue as to where it is. It might even be at my parents. After 20 yrs I still have a lot of "stuff " there. It's a Major irritation to my Mom.

Digging a little deeper into my undiscovered stamp section, I came upon a box that has a bunch of FDCs and already stamped enevelopes.

This was among them and I thought it appropriate.

Rod,
The printing is UNDER the Gum.

Be careful when soaking these, Rod. The ink used to print the text is water soluble, and with enough time in the bath, it becomes faint enough that you can't read it any longer. I put these stamps in the same pile as the bright green & red Christmas envelopes and give them the minimum soaking time needed to get the stamp off the paper. This should leave the text impression clear enough that you can read it without a problem.

There's a second US issue that used the same water soluble ink under the gum, a 1975 set of 4 (3 different values, ranging from 8c to 18c) that was a part of the 1976 Bicentennial commemorative issues.

Ryan

Thank you ladies and gentlemen, that advice puts my mind to rest,
so Tonya, I am happy to pay $8 plus postage (20 sheet, or even strip of ten with selvedge).
I don't expect you to give them away

Email me the total when appropriate
and I'll paypal you same day.
I gotta say, I am rather pleased to get these
They were a pin in the haystack, all I have to do now
is secure those flags.

Still, there's something eerie I find, about the scene.
I wonder if you think like me, on suggestion of the issue, those in charge would sit down and say, "OK we'll have a postie standing on a hill overlooking...."

Henri Cheffer was a painter, and I reckon he probably painted this picture first and had it submitted for a postage stamp issue when approached later.
No argument about the skill with the burin.
Would look absolutely fabulous on cover.
