Stamps Issued For Independence Days.

......and so as we go from Memorial Day...

....to Independence Day, the mood changes from one of solemn remembrance to one of happiness and smiling faces.

At 8pm fireworks light up the night sky......





and the children come out from their homes for hours of fun. There is no school tomorrow so they can stay up late !





But let us cast our minds back to when it all began...as seen through a 1998 Indepependence day stamp issue showing the Declaration of the State of Israel by David Ben Gurion in 1948.



Unlike the Memorial Day issues, Independence Day is celebrated on stamps every 5 years. But there are some nice designs.

Here is one...



The above stamp was issued in 1983 to celebrate the 35th. Also issued as an Imperforate Souvenir sheet.

The next two pictures show how close these two holidays are......same design, different size and with different inscriptions !

But tomorrow is a day for BBQ's and families, so the spirit of freedom and democracy continue until nightfall........

Here is a first day cover of Tuvalu's Independence stamps, the big day was October 1, 1978. The cover is signed from left to right: Toaripi Lauti, the first Prime Minister, Fiatau Penitala Teo, the first Governor General and Vaea Sikale, the first Postmaster.

I took the photo below, the Governor General making a presentation on the first anniversary, October 1,1979.

I would post Australia's Independence stamps... but, we're not independent, so there hasn't been any.

I really like that Yaacov Agam design for the 35th anniversary of independence. France has also released a design by Agam, who is one of my favourite modern artists.

These are my favorite Independence issues, maybe even my favorite set of stamps of all time. At the very least they rank very high among my favorites.

I would consider that one under the personalized postage category and not a commemorative stamp. I can't read it, but it isn't a bad design.

Thanks Ryan, I did not know that. So United States personal "stamps" are actually meter stamps, unlike the Canadian issues, which are real postage stamps.

Yes they are in the meter stamp category, just more colorful most of the time. They are not meant to receive a USPS cancellation.
