Spain belongs to the International Maritime Organisation, the UN specialized agency responsible for improving maritime safety and preventing pollution from ships and it's also committed to technical cooperation.

Since seas and oceans have no borders, the Spanish maritime rescue service is coordinated with the maritime services of neighboring countries creating a world rescue chain. On behalf of the IMO, it has been assigned responsibility over an area of a million and a half square kilometres, three times the size of Spain.

Britain has also issued a series of "Rescue at Sea" stamps this month.

Awesome stamps and awesome people who do that job! I have a friend who's Uncle used to work for the US Coast Guard. He had to retire early because of the stressful life they live--sometimes, deciding who gets rescued first can take it's toll on the rescuer. Brave guys and gals!

Yes youre right Gussy I have a good friend who is with the Canadian Forces Search and Rescue. I can't imagine doing all the stuff they do. Diving into fridgid waters, parachuting in remote areas and repelling down cliffs etc... They are truly heros.
