Hello im in need of some advice here, even though I had already made the deal so im going to honor it,but for next time,i have sold almost my whole DDR collection, except the doubles and used/cto's that are extra's.so here is my question, what is the going price to sell such a collection? how do I determine how to sell such a collection? for example I've cataloged around $1200.00 worth of stamps from the DDR how much would the average collector pay for it? im soooooo confused and advice would great THANKS

That is such a difficult question Tina, one has to really appraise with hardcopy. From my limited experience, I would never sell a collection, that is, a reasonable collection without going through the auction process first. For example, I would have taken the collection to two dealers for an appraisal, then chosen one for the auction process. You may have perhaps offered the collection then to your colleague at the suggested dealer price reserve +/- 10% or whatever you thought reasonable margin.
A couple of years ago, I bought an entire Bohemia&Moravia collection, mint unhinged with tabs for $40 I have seen since part collections go for double that, I have also seen, a collection of Hutt River cinderellas go for $300. There sometimes seems no rhyme or reason with pricing but dealers have their place, and it's times like these their expertise is appreciated. That is just my slant on things, no doubt everybody has their own and differing routes to satisfaction on pricing. Hope this has been of some help.

Hi Tina......
In my opinion......it would depend on the material.....is it all low value items or is the majority of it higher value items ? .....all MNH, used or a mix ? ......Many collectors will not pay more than 25% of SCV......If it were mine, I'd consider offering the group at 75% - 80% of SCV.
I know it's difficult to sell at what seems like a loss but......do you wamt it to sell quickly or are you willing to list it at a higher price and possibly wait 6 months or longer ?
Hope this helps some........and, good luck.

Hi Tina, my buying policy is 25% of Gibbons, not Scott per nr-notrare's post. What that proves is that where you're selling is important.
25% of Gibbons is, as a rule, higher than 25% of Scott. If you're selling into Europe though, you may need to consult Michel's prices.
Ain't easy, is it? |

the best things in life are free
for everything else there is spock? :)
to answer your question it depends on the stamps in it
lets say the collectin was indian and not german
in some cases I could have made a profit of 500 dollars or more selling it at 1200 catalog price
now in other cases I would make a loss of upto $2000 dfor selling it at 1200 catalog price
so it all depends ont he stamps
best thing is to let a german stamp expert on this forum evaluate it and then go by their judgement
int his case you have already sold so forget about it and move on
life is too short :)
hope this helped |

One of the best things for a collector Tina, is to nurture a close and friendly relationship with a good and honest stamp dealer. Most are, and become invaluable over the years for advice, and oft time you can support him/her with handling sales and purchases. Perhaps also, join a stamp club. Collectors love giving advice, and you can get a broad overview or your particular situation, most clubs would have a specialist German collector.

I won't further derail Tina's thread by further encouraging this unhealthy interest in Nabha here - but I will shortly post a few odds of Nabha over in my Who's afraid of the Indian States thread. |

Hello Tina, that is always a tough question to answer, even if it's my item that I'm selling. However, a sale is a sale and the outcome is always happy, it's sadder when no sale is made So youve made a sale and that's a happy event! |
