I hope my friend Bigrideaumike does not mind me using some advice he gave me...most of us know it in the back of our minds..the most expensive way to buy stamps is one stamp at a time !! I just had a chance to take advantage of this advice....i won a Lighthouse hingeless album of Argentina 1945 to 1979..thats 25 years of stamps and sovineer sheets mostly mint never hinged for 99 dollars on the internet...believe me if I had bought those sets and sheets individually the POSTAGE alone from the dealers would have been much more than I paid for the combined album and stamps..figure what a lighthouse hingeless album alone sells for !! I am very happy and kind of astounded that I won it !!

You are quite right.

If I am not mistaken, the Lighthouse hingless albums for Canada are in more than one volume and I think that they retail for well over $200.00 per volume, or close to it anyway! (I could be wrong on my figures but I know that they are quite expensive.)

I guess this is why I prefer ounts and making my own albums

Cheers

Wow! That was a good buy. I do like to get lots of covers because they are a better deal than getting 1 at a time. A great way to strectch your dollar and then if you have duplicates you can turn around and sell or trade for more material.

Yes, an in addition to the buy you get for buying a collection, there are the occasional "surprises" one gets.

I recently bought a Swiss collection, in a stock book, for 480 that drew no attention on ebay. It was a treasure worth far far more and saving me a ton had I bought things either individually or in smaller lots.

(My problem now is how to fill my holes. I don't what the massive duplication you'd get with a collection and individual purchases are just too expensive.)

I had the same experience wih my Swiss collection. I was the only bidder, at the last moments and although I didn't add it up, I'm sure it was at 10% or so of catalog. I actually felt sorry for the seller and for the poor collector who assembled the material and to see it go for a pittance.

It reminds you that in normal terms this is a hobby not an investment.

Great find Philby!

Last year I bought a large Tuvalu collection for less than $40 on ebay - lots of junk but several very rare watermarks and printing varieties in multiples. The cost was about 20 percent face.

I recently won 3 lots of early Guatemala for less than 20% catalog including the shipping. One stamp alone catalogs at 70% of what I paid for all three lots.
