The uber expert on silent precancels would be Arnold Selengut, as he exhibits these and has won a few golds for that exhibit. If you send me an email, I can provide you with his email address. I'd post it here, but I'm thinking that might not be such a good idea.

I'm sure warrehouse that it wasn't made to look that way. These stamps were just in a plastic baggy and my Dad didn't really care much about them.He probably picked them up in a junk auction.

Halfwitty,
I was just listing all possibilities as to the source of the stamp, not that I thought it really could be a fake.

But good eye!

Response from Arnold.

Hi, Eric,

In my opinion your stamp is not a precancel, but just a stamp cancelled by the killer portion of a machine canceller. I think that these types of stamps, once removed from the envelopes on which they originated, confuse more novice collectors than any other type of cancel. I refer you to the book "Silent Precancels" which can be purchased from the Precancel Stamp Society Catalog Department. Check it out at www.precancels.com by clicking on PSS Catalogs and then referring to the tenth item down in the resulting list.

Best regards and good luck,

Arnold

Thanks for posting the response, Halfwitty!

Well, after finding no matches in the Catalogue my machine cancel thought was the correct one.

Arnold is refering to the same catalogue I was working with.
