Jason BD, I think the "fun" part would be not using a catalog for this one and only relying on one's instincts in identifying the most valualbe stamp. (If I'm correct, most members participating in this one wouldn't have the catalogs anyway---and I promise to stay away from my ancient copy of SG British Commonwealth stamps ) BTW, this could also be made into a "guess-the-correct-door" kind of contest by keeping the stamps face down |

Its good to see interest in the 2004 catalogs..they cost 55 dollars each here in New York and I know they cost a lot more in Canada and most of the world..for a new collector they do not need to see yearly value increases..they can get a general idea from the older catalog.. a couple of years ago our club decided to purchase a set of the 2005 scott catalogs on CD's and before you could say whatever..there were 15 copiies floating around...must have been magic ! Personally I still like hardcopy books..my wife prefers the disks.. |

2004 scott catalogs would be great for a collector..mine are a mix of 2003 and 2006..are you kidding ? I am not going to buy a new set of catalogs every year..the only thing with the 2004s will be that the shipping will be a bear ! |

Great idea, having a contest to win the stamp catalogues. However, just a tibit of information to all the losers of the contest. About a month after Scotts distributes their new catalouges, I go to my local library, to see if they have them in the Reference Section. If they do have the new catalogues, I head to the check out area, and ask if they have the old catalouges, for sale. I was able to pick up the 2004 edition, for three bucks each. The Library is more than happy to get rid of them, and at a great price. |

Hey, Jason! When I first signed up on the forum it listed my age as 14! Does that count?! We're all "Young at Heart" I love the idea of splitting the catalogs up for the contest! The info about the library Scott's catalogs is FANTASTIC and helpful! Gussyboy1 |

I just checked the US Postal site and shipping a 4-5 lbs package to Australia is $30.00 - $45.00.........seems like a lot for one book. What does a complete set weigh ? |

I only paid about $50 for a set. Howbeit the set is from three different years and from several sources, but that's Okay for my uses. The only problem I run into is when I need to check out a stamp that is newer than the cataloge. Is there any where you can get updates, other than buying a whole new set of cataloges? |

Being a newbie at stamp collecting and certainly overwhelmed by a lot of it, I went on ebay and typed in Scotts catalog--Oh my goodness! I never realized they were that expensive! I was coming from the coin collecting frame of mind where all I needed was a Redbook! What about the computer software---anyone out there have it for the Scotts catalog?? Gussyboy |

Gussey....
In my 50 years of collecting I've only had two new set of Scott cats....including the 08 set I have now. But I do get a new US Specialized of stamps and Covers every year. A used set or even just a used US Specialized a few years old will allow you to catalog all but the newest items at a fraction of the cost of a new set. |

I guess I got lucky I just bought the 2007 vol 6 for $11.25 on ebay. Shipping was 20.00 though so the guy said I could add whatever I want that would fill the box. He was selling individual countries from the 2007 catalogues so I go about 10 of the countries that I have the most stamps of that are not in vol 6 they averaged $4.00 ea some were under a$1.00. It's making my life a whole lot easier. Dianne |
