kjh I think your advice was right, just start auctioning because then I get more realistic prices, right?I am quickly amassing a list of stamps that I will try to sell for face value or slightly more based on other offerings ie. ebay (of course as a novice I will make mistakes but with modern canadian stamps how costly can that be?)

For modern stamps, the key is to be able to ID stamps that are worth more than FV at retail, or have a good premium. That's where a quick thumb-through of a print catalog comes in handy. For US and Canada, less than 5% of stamps issued after 1940 fall into that category. When looking, ignore the absolute catalog value, since all the catalog values will be above FV. Look for the catalog values that are noticeably higher than the standard 2x-3x face value multiplier.

khj, thanks again for the tips. So 1940's and earlier is where I should start to become more cautious with pricing? Otherwise most of what I scanned yesterday is worth FV or double at most. (out of 260 blocks of 4 I have quickly priced about 40 blocks on ebay and found only one that was substantially above FV...five bucks! yahoo).
