One more Jind for Jubilee, which quite by chance arrived today: The 1922 Nine Pies surcharge on 1 Anna, SG 79, and quite a tough stamp to find used, never mind on cover. Evidently the inhabitants of Jind weren't heavy users of registered mail. |

And this on the Patiala Peg, lifted with due acknowledgments, from the Lonely Planet India: 'In the early 1900s, a particularly important tent-pegging contest took place in Patiala between the teams of the Viceroy and the Maharaja of Patiala. Tent-pegging was the curious sport of spearing a small wooden stake in the ground with a lance from the back of a galloping horse. British and Patialan pride was at stake as both teams were undefeated.
Desperate to win and fearful of the wrath of the their maharaja, the Patialan team invited their opponents to drinks the night before the match. The British team was plied with much larger than usual measures of whisky. While this was happening the tent pegs were changed, smaller ones for the viceroy's team and larger ones for the Patialans. The maharaja's team won but the viceroy's team lodged a complaint. They were told that, in Patiala, well known for its hospitality, the pegs were always larger and so the Patiala Peg became known as an extra large measure of whisky.'

Don't worry, Spock. I have already stuck large hinges on the backs of each stamp, to render it safe. |
