If you really want a goal, Here you go! Sadly these are not mine. But I take solace in knowing that years ago I did own both! But without the salvage. |

By the way the E.C. on both of these is Erasmus Corning of Corning Glass. Both are also cancelled on the same day! Imagine dropping $700 or more in taxes in one day! Remember this was 1872! At that time most people didn't make that in a year! |

In my opinion the $200 & $500 are 2 of the most spectacularly engraved stamps ever made! The true pinnacle of the engravers art! |

What do you think Corning would have been producing to attract that sort of tax in those days ?
Would Glass Telegraph insulators be a canny suggestion? or was he a soft drink bottle manufacturer? anyone?

The $200 & $500 were most commonly used on Mortgage contracts. With around 75%(estimate) being used by the Railroad Companies for land purchases and Leases. At one time most of Corning, NY was owned by Corning (hence the name). I would guess they were used on a Mtge. Contract or deed. Side Note: If you are ever near Corning, NY. The Glass Works is quite impressive and worth a visit. |
