If the tape has not started to yellow and become brittle, or if it has not started to discolor the stamp, You can try rubber cement adhesive remover. If the tape has started to become yellow and brittle, and has started to discolor the stamp you are pretty much out of luck. I say pretty much because there is a chemical process to reverse it. In most cases it is to difficult and not worth the effort. You also do run the chance of COMPLETE destruction of the stamp. So, even if it was worth it you still might not want to do it! I have personally tried it with mixed results. It is difficult and you need a fairly good working knowledge of chemistry the correct equipment and chemicals to do it.
I just remembered there is an easier process if it is just the Adhesive.
1)Saturate the stamp with Carbon Tetrachloride. 2)Gently brush the stamp (right, left, circular, up, down). 3)As the stamp dries and the liquid dissipates brush the area(with dry clean brush). 4)Repeat Several times. 5)Wash with Tween 20 (AKA Polysorbate 20) 6)Wash with Distilled water.

I recently had a pair of stamps with tape on them. So I soaked them in acetone (which I use for cleaning coins) for a while and the tape peeled off fairly easily. Only managed to save one stamp though. Steve |

There seems to be tape that will come off and some that will not.
Next time I am going to try the freezer! |

Thank you that is interesting. I had 20 or so place mats stuck together because of the water based estapol not being cured properly and discovered this problem some 2 year after storage and could not separate them. Put them in the freezer for 3 hours and they all came apart without any damage. So maybe if it was an oil based issue they would not have come apart. |

Carbon tetrachloride is very hazardous and a carcinogen. If you have some and are using it, take extreme cautions. |

I have tried many times with no success. I once had a parcel with 6 $8.00 stamps on and a great big peice of packing tape straight accross all of them I cried for 2 days. I had lots of freinds looking for these. Dianne |

I said the Carbon Tetrachloride method was easier NOT safer! Just to clarify I do NOT recommend it. But it does work. Most chemicals are dangerous if you don't know what you have or what you are doing! Just as an example(PLEASE DON"T TRY THIS!) Clorox will whiten your wash, Ammonia will clean your windows. Mixed together they make a DEADLY combination! |

I have tried lighter fluid with mixed results. Sometimes it would work and others it would not. |
