Just a thought I'm having recently: After years of collecting Commonwealth classic and between wars period and being a bit of a snob as far as modern stamps are concerned I am (re-) descovering the charm of modern/recent issues. Especially the definitive stamps which are always interesting for varieties. These are also very nice when presented as a whole set.

Here's an example + details:

I wonder what others think of it,

Avi

Funny thning you brought that up Avi.

When I was working on my German collection over the winter, my first thought when sorting through the German famous women was WHAT A PAIN!

Once I had them all sorted and started filling the appropriate pages I decided I loved the look of these pages. I also decided that I would do some reaserch on the different women.

I went through the same thing with other diffinative sets.

Now I kind of enjoy the process. I simply give myself more time to work on them.

Just my 2cents worth.

Dianne

Seahorse's stamp the 150pfennig issue
shows that very brave lass Sophie Scholl

There is a DVD about her called "The Final Days"
what a brave young girl.

Sophia Magdalena Scholl (9 May 1921 – 22 February 1943) was a German student, active within the White Rose non-violent resistance group in Nazi Germany. She was convicted of high treason after having been found distributing anti-war leaflets at the University of Munich with her brother Hans. As a result, they were both executed by guillotine.

I do love definitive stamp series, old and new.... I've been spending my weekend with this Hungarian series:

Simplified series is 15 stamps, but perforation and paper varieties included there are 70+ items to collect.

More about my "weekend adventure" with these on my blog at http://www.stampcollectingblog.com/...p-series.php (and a follow-up entry will come in day or two when I've got all the new goodies sorted properly).

I also love these Hugarian stamps. The thing that strikes me every time I get into modern definitives is more or less the experience Dianne was describing. As an example the Italian Castles comes to mind. During the never ending duration of its production about 3 tons were piling up on one of my drawers. I hated their looks (not to mention their sound and smell). Now - after years - sorting them is fun: the basic set is nice looking and the varities are such a wonderful pond to dive into.

Even the somewhat ugly (in my own very subjective eyes) Hungarian stamps of SCB look very fun to deal with.....

Rod and DJD - research is fun. Personally I prefer the philatelic one but can easily relate to the historic one as well.

Bobggggg - Years ago I made a printable file to accomodate Tycophil's ****manistan stamps, which I think you also collect . Do you want me dig this file and send it over?

Interesting colours on scb's example,
illustrates the advancement of printer's ink,
these may be classified almost as "neon" shades.

Avi, I can understand how you feel about the Italian castle series..however, having spent 20 drunken months in Southern Italy where every town has a castle on the hill..i developed an affinity for them...many of them had generations of still semi clothed skeletons on the lower level.well some were skeletons and some were kind on mummyfied.....quite interesting to see my old haunts Taranto,Brindisi and Bari on stamps !!

It was the 1980's... I still get traumatized every time I remember the clothes people wore back then (and no, I don't know the gal in the picture... It's just something appropiate I quickly dugg up from Flickr).

The good news is that these Hungarian stamps were printed on several paper types, and some of them bring up the colors less vividly. LOL.

I'm happy to see someone else collecting used German issues as I collect used only (except for SSheets an booklets).

That particular series was fun to collect for me also, Avi, but it was also frustrating because my Scott's pages had a mislabeled space or two and it took me a while to get it all figured out.

I'm now trying to finish out the "flower" definitive series and I believe the pages for this long set are also subject to an error or two.

I have spares of most of both sets, and many other used German if anyone has a need for a few. I will have three lots arriving soon. 200 grams of on-paper semi-postals from 2004 to 2010, 200 grams each of on-paper commemoratives and definitives from 2006 to 2010 all coming from Germany, and 1/4 pound of regular and semi-postal coming from Singapore. There will be plenty of soaking, sorting, drying, and cataloging and plenty of stamps to share with my brothers and sisters.

laswabbie - seems like you are preparing yourself for a long and busy winter, eh?
