Plate numbers, color codes, and admonishments from Kim aside, "DO NOT hinge the selvage part either...." :)
(Wish someone had told that to our ancestors who not only hinged almost everything, but didn't know enough to collect 4 or 6 of everything because that would be more valued....)
Anyway..

Here is something I found today to warm the cockles of everyone's hearts. All I can tell you is that I know it is pre-1955. It is posted on the sheets of 1929.

Now, can you tell me something about it?

Ahhh, beautiful! Special handling stamps, simple but exquisite design. In the Scott catalog, QE1-QE3. I've checked, you do not have any of the better known plate flaws in your pic.

Not shown in your scan is the 25c denomination.

From the Scott catalog:

Quote:
The Postal Service Act, approved February 28, 1925, provided
for a special handling stamp of the 25-cent denomination for use on
fourth-class mail matter, which would secure for such mail matter the
expeditious handling accorded to mail matter of the first class.

These 3 stamps were actually reissued in 1955 using the new "dry printing" technique. Previously, the stamps were "wet printed".

there are pages and pages of how to tell difference between wet and dry... what is the simple answer, other than ... my grandpa says, and filed it on the 1929 section?

There is absolutely nothing in this "binder" which would scream 1955. That's all stuff I've yet to look at.

Well, the dry printings for that Special Handling issue didn't come out until 1955. So if he stopped collecting before that, then the stamps must be wet printed. For this particular issue, it's actually a little harder than normal to distinguish between wet and dry printings without actually examining the stamps or being able to directly compare to a reference stamp.

Well, since he was already "passed" at that point... pretty safe to say he didn't collect in 1955.

It's ok, not a big deal.

I actually found a cover today, with telegraphs from my GGGrandfather to "cousin" re: impending demise and then passing of my grandmother in 1874. I'm blessed to have the history and the stamps... or lack there of. On the other hand, I noticed the hair raise at the back of my neck when I read them....

I must say, you inherited a very nice collection; especially the family nostalgia.

I thought that stamp was only issued in wet printing? Please provide any info you may have on the dry printing. Thanks!

There is a good write-up on the Special Handling series, to include an explanation of the wet vs. dry process, at http://www.1847usa.com/identify/YearSets/1928.htm.

Another fine selection of well designed stamps. The BOB issues really have an eye catching quality about them. Especially, if you have a page of them to admire.
