Does this mean that here on the forum than we may have a problem referring to stamps by their Scott numbers?

One would think that Scott would be all in favor of anyone using Scott numbers--after all they have become essential in discussing many stamps, particularly US ones.

It's not like I foresee ever buying a Scott Catalog, especially a first-hand one. It's not that the price is totally unreasonable, as the catalogs are very well printed, but I get them for free from the library (assuming I return them from time to time).

I don't think scott cares about us talking about them... and if they did so what. We could switch to using Stanley Gibbons numbers. (if only they would print a US edition using dollars)
btw... Amos press made a early version of their catalog available on line for free, I posted about it some time ago.
Anyway I emailed themas well, politely asking them to let 1847usa.com alone.

I just emailed Amos Press, also very politely, asking them to reconsider their decision.

No, condition (e) states:

Quote:
Such use if for editorial purposes in publications in the form of articles or commentary...

And even if they didn't state that, it falls under "Fair Use" under US copyright law.

Another numbering-cataloging system could be set up..but what are the chances everyone would go along with it ? The International Society of Guatemala collecters have their own numbering system..all stamps are numbered by their issue date no b's for semipostals ..no C's for airmail..but they do list the stamps scott catalog # also to avoid confusion !

My first post!

I too just e-mailed Amos Press and politely voiced my displeasure with their strong-arm tactics. I informed them that I use many resources including their publications and that it was beneficial to them to allow collectors to have a common reference.

I used 1847usa all the time for help with identifying variations. Is there another site that is as useful? I'd love to hear about it if there is. The waybackmachine site listed above does work but I feel bad for Bob Allen and I think it's a slap in the face to all stamp collectors having Amos Press take the tools of their hobby away from them.

Maybe it is time for a new numbering system that is not copy-written to become the default system. I'm not sure if that is feasible though.

It's just another case of the big guys stepping on the little guys.

Thanks for listening to my rant,

Prog

The World Association for the Development of Philately (WADP) and the Universal Postal Union (UPU) jointly conceived and developed the WADP Numbering System - WNS, which was launched on 1 January 2002.

The WNS does not include any stamps issued prior to 1/1/2002.

I just looked at the WNS site. It doesn't list all the countries either.

But maybe the numbering system could be used to go backwards, at least some work is done. 45k + stamps is a good start.

I agree, but my metaphor is a bit more crude.
