I have several plate number blocks and am wondering if there is a reference which will correlate the number to the issue.

Specifically, I have a plate block of Scott 481 (US) with the plate number 8117. Does this match the stamp issue?

Any advice will be appreciated. Thanks.

This particular stamp was printed using 157 different plates (and associated plate numbers).

8117 is indeed one of the plates that was used to print this stamp. The range of plate numbers for this issue goes from 7535 to 13381.

My 2005 Durland Standard Plate Number Catalog lists this plate block at $15. Only two plate numbers are valued higher than that: 13376, 13377.

From what I can tell, the plates created for use were numbered sequentially but because they were making plates for different issues at the same time, you will not often find sequential numbering on all plates from a particular issue. The previous plate number for this issue is 8116, and the following is 8168.

Hope that helps.
