With this weekend being the 5th anniversary of when Hurricane Katrina hit the Gulf coast I was wondering if there ever had been a stamp or FDC that had been printed to commemorate that horrific, but historic part of history. I didn't find what I was looking for, but I did find this.

Anyone that lives around there could pick up a FDC it seems, but only for today. I wish I had found this sooner.

Hawai'i Post issued 2 semi-postal stamps on October 5, 2005, with the surcharge going to the American Red Cross in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

It's official,
22crows is the chief SCF researcher,
I looked everywhere for Katrina stamps, without success.

Well, 22crows. What say you? Do you accept the position of Chief SCF Researcher? You have saved the day on quite a few instances where info or images were needed. You do have that knack.

I am unfamiliar with Hawaii Post. Is it official? Surely it can't be recognized by the USPS.

Concerning Hawaii Post - If you go to the "About Us" link on the link cited above, one of the entries is as follows:

"May 1997, "Hawai'i Post" is established as a messenger and delivery service in Waikiki to pick up and deliver urgent mail."

Kind of an interesting website/service.

Donna,

It's not too late for you to get one of the cancellations.

The Postmark Pursuit section in Linn's says requests for the cancellation have to be postmarked no later than 30 days after the date of the cancellation to qualify for the service. In the case of the Gulfpex Katrina cancellation, those dates are September 4 and 5.

All you have to do is put correct postage on an envelope or postcard addressed to whomever you wish and place it in a larger envelope addressed to: Postmaster, GULFPEX Station, 356 Ginger Drive, Biloxi, MS 39532-9998.

If you're sending in an envelope, it is recommend that you insert cardstock inside to protect against bending.

The envelope/postcard will be returned to you in the normal mailstream. If you want it returned under protective cover, you need to include a larger, addressed envelope with 44 cents postage and include a note requesting that the cancelled envelope be returned in that envelope.

Steve,
Thanks for the heads up. I really do want the FDC for this and this would be a nice addition.

Glad to have been able to help. Here is the postmark they'll be putting on your cover.
