lubos,

When I join the goephila organization, do I receive the full list? It states it is in Czech only on the web. Is it in English or other languages on paper perhaps?

If you join us, you have to pay 200 crowns, it's about ten dollars and I could manage, that you would receive the full list. If you want to, you could also buy our Geophila catalogs (it is in Czech and English, but the description is just in Czech). TThe list is in English on the web, by the way, on the left side there English flag. Click on it and it translates in English. :)

I think that collectors who collect stamps WW are becoming scarce because they soon find out that it is really impossible to keep up.

I have also noticed that a lot of former WW collectors tend to decide to keep stamps by theme or topic. By doing so, they can still have a WW 'representation' in their collections.

I know, this posting is a little bit of a different slant <G> .

Cheers

Bujutsu

That is true Bujutsu, WW collectors are more rare than crocus :D. There is in our "WW society" about 100 members. But more of them are in the whole world. I know about five people that have all stamp territories. But that's why I collect this. Everybody can get all stamps from most countries, but get all stamps from whole world is harder. At the end, the final effect, satisfaction, etc. that's what I want to achieve.

Modern, thanks.

lubos, Thank you for the explanation for me. I get lost looking at links sometimes. Just got lost on the link to Yvert et Tellier website. It is nice for me to see how many other people think about stamps and how they collect.

Thanks for posting your links, they lead to other new links for me. Fun!

Bujutsu,, I think you are right in the idea that there are just so many world wide stamps now. When I started collecting worldwide there were only two volumes in the Scott catalogue. Not so intimidating. But now, 6 volumes and maybe ++, whew! Too much.

I see Yvert has catalogues for just one year of world stamps, just for the recent years, but that is a good way to collect also. Hint hint for Scott catalogues there!

I like this geographilately (new word, takes longer for me to spell correctly!) it lets you break down your collecting into areas.

Well that was possible before also, I know, but with this approach, if you do not want to get a stamp from everywhere you can see, you can get one from a smaller area than worldwide like Europe, or smaller again like German States, etc. It is not so hard on the human mind that way. Big steps broken down into small steps. I think it works when you look at it that way. Not so over-whelming.

I am used to thinking of the world and then each country in the world. No easy smaller steps in between. Maybe that is just me. I didn't have the skills or discipline myself to break it down into areas other than world and countries. But looking at it from the perspective of areas, which are stated on these geophilately sites, it just is right there in front of a person and it feels easier to me somehow.

Of course, this doesn't help those of us who have a bit of a compulsive collecting gene or upbringing. Which is mostly all of us I think. You know you're a stamp collector when . . .

My personal experience is pretty much the opposite...I think that the w/w collecting is one of those few areas where the number of stamp collectors is actually increasing. And instead of being "men with prostate problems", a lot of these folks are about my age (30-40 years) or younger. And surprisingly there are quite a many specimens of opposite sex involved too. All the signs of "vital hobby" I think. And I'm pretty much willing to praise Internet alone for the growth... Sadly philatelic organizations don't get any credit from me for encouraging folks to pleasures of worldwide collecting.

scb, as a ww collecting, specimen of the opposite sex, in the 30-40 age group, I am happy to be a statistic in favour of your argument.

...or then they can simply create few "heavily loaded" stockbooks. I know a worldwide collector who fills his stockbooks to contain 100-150 stamps per page by placing stamps slightly on top of each other.... His collection of 150,000 diff w/w stamps is currently housed in about 20 thick 64-pager stockbooks. It sure does safe him a lot of money, and he seems happy with his method.

Nice interesting thread here folks.

I hate to admit it, but, when I was a kid and got my first Scott catalogue, it was in one massive volume. About a couple of years after that, it was then two. I guess you all know the history from there on <G>

How I promised, here is a scan of few stamp countries (territories). It's just on you if you have stamps in stockbooks or not. Now I'm working on this - in the middle of the sheet, there is a name of the country, in the left top corner is a map, in the right top corner is a flag or coat of arms. Under the map there is a short description and down in the middle is a catalog number (it's a number of WW catalog).
On the first picture you can see Central African state, then Swaziland, boer-british administration; Tetuan; Togo, anglo-french occupation; Transvaal, british occupation of Z.A.R. during the first boer war; Tristan du Cunha; Outer seychelles, West Griquiland and West Cameroon

I will add some stamps from other continents later. Hope you enjoy it.
