okay I just got 3 volumes of a ww stamp collection at auction for $20.00 total..

Here is the deal,, they are all TAPED to the pages..
Some have enough paper on them that I can soak them off..
We are talking some CLASSIC WW stamps..
for instance 1854-+ 1 penny red
confederate stamp #2 US
the very early issues of most of the worlds postage stamps..
An entire section of German and states starting from almost the very beginning through 1939
we are talking some old stamps from dead countries..
Here is a sample... I was able to clean the tape of the 1 penny red by using stamp safe fluid...
so besides removing them as fast as possible form the albums any ideas on preservation. reconditioning? Are they even worth anything?

Hi Stampvirgin

I was always under the impression that there was no hope for stamps that hd scotch tape applied to them. Especially too once they have 'welded' to the page and you can see through the stamp where the tape was applied.

I hate to say it, but I too have seen a couple of collections that could have had some nice stamps in it but was ruined because of scotch tape

Cheers

thanks.. I think some are hinged and most are taped...
so the basic rule is, if the tape shows through then it is garbage, right? not worth anything...

WRONG! I have had sucess with the above process! It seems to depend on the degree of damage. Any stamps that are of reasonable value are worth a shot!

I`m guessing you got your money`s worth at $20.

I hope not too many are damaged too badly.

You should be able to salvage some

BTW, the Newfoundland 1 cent green and it (Number 61) is listed at $1.75 for fine.

Thanks for this information. I too thought that if it was taped there was no hope for the stamp. It is good to learn otherwise.

If you live in or near a big enough city, check with the chemical suppliers in the phone book. Barring that, you will probably have to go through a laboratory supply company, and if you can get it, will be saddled with exorbitant shipping charges for the packaging and transporting of hazardous material.

As an afterthought, go to a camera or photographic supply store and see what they have in film cleaners. I don't know what it will do about tape, but these things would remove things such as ink from film without harming it. Kodak had one that contained trichloroethane (methyl chloroform) that reminded me a lot of carbon tetrachloride, and there is also something which I believe was called PEC-12 that didn't smell nasty at all, but needed to be used in a well ventilated area. There is a good chance that these will do what carbon tet would do and might be worth a try.

Lots of interesting info!

I have had some good out comes with tape removal and I think a water based glue is the reason it works on some and not on others.
I am still very much a learner in this area.

Using tape as hinges is a new one for me!
