US special doesn't say anything about pink backing paper.. could it have come from a pink envelope that stained the stamp? |

Quote: Stamps that are affixed to colored paper should be soaked separately. The dyes used to create colored envelopes often run in water, and stain all of the stamps in the bath. (from Linn's.com Refresher Course) I agree with SV, the stamp was most likely affixed to a colored envelope and the color bled into the stamp's backing during the soaking process. |

Fred is spot on. The paper is colored by the envelope it was soaked off from.

Hi, I have another one but the rose color is on the front side. Back is white and clear. Is it a normal stamp? Thank you! |

Hi bobgggg,
I can understand for the first stamp... it can be a red envelope but the second one is only rose on the design face. The back is completly white. How it is possible?
Thank you! |

The pinkish hue you see on your stamp is fairly common for this stamp as well as others in the Liberty series, if you can get into the 1847USA archives and pull up the Liberty series there is a side by side view of this stamp. You can also see an example on apnss.org. The Liberty series has several stamps that take on a colored hue some more than others.I have a used pinky #1041 in my National album and I'm sure several others stashed away. |

Link to KGV_Collector's thread on his family's sorting and soaking Australian stamps. Pic 3/4 of the way down the page (6) of what coloured (dyed) paper can do. https://goscf.com/t/8193&whichpage=6The dye is water soluble so transfers into the paper fibres but does not change the inks (oil, acrylic, plastic, metallic) used for the designs of he stamps. |
