In going through a box of old meter cuts I came upon these, which are the oldest I have in my collection. Anyone have anything older?

I guess meters do date back to the 1920's but they were not that common until the 1950's. In fact, to quote from an old Linn's Stamp News article:

"In 1930 only 5 percent of all mail was franked with meter stamps, up to only 19.5 percent 10 years later."

I do love those oval ones especially. I will check the date on my oldest ones when I get home (yes, I am posting from work, on my lunch break).

For the U.S.:
Nov 16, 1920, Metered mail was born in Stamford, Connecticut, with the first Pitney Bowes postage meter.

Wow! Those are the oldest meters I've seen and based on the previous post they are within months of the first meter introduction.

While not as old as the ones I previously posted, even though Pitney Bowes may have cornered the market, it is good to know that there were at least a few competitors around:

They are indeed old. These are from a few years later.

The last one is different smauggie,
I think they call that type a "pre paid permit"

Nice stuff. As you can probably tell from my posts, I just went through a box of meters. I lost count after 500 pieces that predate 1949.

If you buy postage-paid shipping labels online, through ebay or PayPal, at least, they are processed through a Pitney Bowes website and you will see "US POSTAGE PAID PITNEY BOWES" printed on the labels.

Rod - You are right as rain. I thought I would throw it in the scan since it was in the same glassine as the others.
