Hi. I'm new here and appreciate the opportunity to ask about some interesting stamps, covers and other items I have had for about 50 years. Just now trying to learn more about them and value for potential sale. I accumulated these from an old estate in Baltimore, Maryland in the 1970s.

This is a folded letter written on February 22 and March 15, 1717 addressed to Lincolnshire. This letter, as was done back then, was folded and sealed with a wax seal and addressed on the outside. It has an old period hand cancellation which looks like the numbers "2, 2" over "T,P" in a circle.

Very interesting and old! If anyone has information about this letter and cancelation, I would love to learn more. Does this have any value? I know that vlaue is not based on age alone.

Thanks a lot for any information!

I'm guessing the good ship Carolina, with its 24 chests? of wine came in at Boston, this being the nearest port to Horncastle. Gibson must have sampled the wine, judging by his praise of it! The Society for Lincolnshire History and Archaeology would no doubt be very interested in a scan of the letter. https://slha.org.uk/

What is Bishop's Mark? This is great info, thanks! I'll look into getting a copy to the Historical people at Lincolnshire.

The first postal mark named after postmaster-general Henry Bishop.

I sent an e-mail with the pictures to the Lincolnshire Historical Association. I'll let you know if I get a response. These links are great!

Bishops mark covers are collectable and have value. The majority seem to sell in the $10 to $20 range, but some can go much higher especially if they have historically important content and where you are paying for that content more than the cover itself. I am not an expert on specific Bishops marks so I cannot say whether this particular one is rare or would have a greater value than ordinary ones.
