Illustrated Philatelic Glossary

Some time ago, I decided to compile a philatelic glossary for my own use, adding to it as and when I felt inspired or came across an unfamiliar term.

Although there are already a number of glossaries online, none really suited my needs, and, in particular, I wanted to accommodate terminology as it is used on both sides of the Atlantic.

As it grew, I realised that others might find my glossary useful, so I decided to make it public. It can be found here: Glossary.

Each entry ends with a small grey ball, intended to represent a world globe. Clicking it provides a direct link to the topic for anyone who wishes to share it.
Also, images accompanying some definitions can be enlarged simply by clicking on them.

The glossary is not yet complete. I have an ever-growing list of topics that I intend to add as time permits, and many of the entries that ought to be illustrated are still awaiting their images. Nevertheless, I hope that, even as it currently stands, there is already enough information here for others to find it useful.

Well done. Very clean design and clear descriptions. I might like some of the picture enlargements to be larger when clicking to get the expanded version, but otherwise the use and selection of pictures are excellent. Thanks for publishing.

I do regret not making the expanded images larger, unfortunately redoing them would be a major undertaking, but maybe someday.

A glossary of philatelic terms is a really valuable asset. I have a collection of Stamps and Philatelic material that tries to illustrate such terms. It is amazing how many people even "experts" don't actually know what some terms mean. It can also be difficult to define some terms. Also there is the problem of how specialist some phrases are. Looking through a Canadian catalogue there were many names for stamps I had never heard before. I look forward to using your glossary.

Linn's had one online (I had saved a copy some time back) but it is gone after the revamped the Linn's site after Linn's was sold to Scott Stamp LLC.
