i received a lighthouse stamp album for canada and I am trying to identify the stamp numbers for the missing early stamps

obviously most are very very costly and I dont expect to ever find them but I would still like to try to identify their stamp number

the problem is that try as I might I do not understand what lighthouse are referring to most of the time as I try to match what my unitrade 2024 catalog says with what they are showing in the album

it is like lighthouse has space for a limited number of stamps or the catalog has too much variety

i would like to update my canada missing stamps list

i took pictures of the first few pages of my album
i added a few numbers at the bottom of some spaces but I am not even sure if these are correct.

can you help me identify the stamp numbers that this lighthouse album is requiring?

thank you for your help

Well, you've come upon one of the challenges of stamp collecting. I'm pretty sure that Lighthouse lays out the stamps in their albums according to the Michel catalog which doesn't necessarily number things the same way as Unitrade. I think Unitrade follows the Scott # system.

The same thing happened to me. I use a Schaubek album for Germany and they also use Michel. I eventually had to ante up and buy a Michel catalog. I found a slightly used one on ebay for a very good price.

Your Lighthouse album is a very good one just not in sync with Unitrade. Some public libraries still get stamp catalogs and so you might have access to Michel that way. My small town library doesn't have them so I got my own.

@mainer
there are no numbering in the album so it is not dependent on any specific catalogue
since I use the unitrade catalog which as I understands it uses the scott numbering those are the numbers I am trying to get

The individual characteristics of similar stamps which vary in e.g. colour, perforation or printing process are noted on the respective album sheets. This only applies to stamps with Michel (major) numbers and includes the year where required. At all times we aim for a harmonious and aestetically pleasing presentation.

That's a quote from Lighthouse. Way I read it, the album's based on an idea by Michel, like Nolan's new film is based on an idea by Homer.

Lighthouse, actually, is the German publisher Leuchtturm. Like Lindner, SAFE, and Schaubeck, the German stamp albums are based on the Michel listings, as Mainer wrote. Michel, also, is published in Germany.

The order and the grouping of stamps, normally, will follow that in the Michel Canada listing. This may leave out stamps from the Unitrade listing, and even add stamps. So, you may come across groups that are different from those in the Unitrade catalogue. The order may differ. Or stamps listed in a group in the Unitrade catalogue may be listed separately, or separate listings in Unitrade may be added to a group.

Colours may even be named differently. In part, this is due to colours being named differently, in part, it may be because colour varieties are categorised differently.

Kira, just take your time. Follow the order and flow of the catalogue your using, not the album. They are usualy arranged in album to look astetically pleasing and not necessarily in numerical order. Look at the year, imperforated or perforated, denominaton on stamp, color of stamp. Varieties somtimes are shown in albums, but generally they show the common standard #'s available.

That first page you show for example, has numbers shown printed by someone. Looks like Scott numbering system but with errors
Now use Scott or unitrade numbering system and - compare the images and notes to the stamps in album with their notes; and from left to right starting at top-
You will find the top 3 rows are numbered correctly,
Row 4 shows #8/11; #13 This is Numbered incorrectly as #8 is imperforate but #11 is perforated - note in heading
Row 5 shows #4/#12 This is incorrect as #4 is imperforate while #12 is perforated as noted in heading
Do not depend wholy what others write, as mistakes are often made, and they should have read the noted imperforate/perforated heading. This is an example showing you should always check the stamp against the catalogue and album space to make sure it is the correct one.
Enjoy. Mike

Hi Kira,

I've been designing and printing my own pages since 2009 as I want to be able to decide what to collect rather than what a stamp album publisher. I've applied this philosophy to my U.S. collection and more recently to my Canadian, Canadian Provinces, and Mexico collections. I generally don't include Scott/Unitrade numbers on the pages to avoid copyright entanglements. If you'd like to see my approach to album pages, check out my website at http://www.scottsstampcollection.com

Kira, did not note that you wrote the numbers. Thats ok because you are on the correct path to learning, as all of us did. And I will put it like this- it is a long road with a lot of bumps along the way and side streets with many differing paths and new ones being added. You made a great attempt, better than some newbies, and will continue to do so.
