Good morning, eight for today, well, seven and a re-visit. Mendocino, the re-visit. The two Men-2360s used as receivers on the San Francisco postal card shown on the 7th would be new LKUs. California Town Postmarks 1850 - 1935 records usage for this CDS as Apr 17, 1882 to Nov 14, 1887. These two are 7 months later. Potter Valley, in my image file, this cover is entitled Potter Valley Jun 9 1899 illegal usage. Why? That PSE indica is a cut out, it is pasted on. If you look closely, it is not glued on squarely. I had to resort to looking at the actual cover, took a while until I found it. Melbourne, Elk, Eureka & San Fran. RPO, Eureka, Eureka & San Fran. RPO, Eureka & S. F. HPO, Edit to add illegal usage info. |

Good morning, four today. Sanel, this office opened three times! Sep 25 1860 to Jan 29 1869, a manuscript postmark known. Aug 10 1869 to Dec 13 1875, cataloged as Men-3470, shown here; https://goscf.com/t/11887&whichpage=139#840039 Name changed to Hopland. Re-opened as Sanel Jul 13 1889 to Sep 2 1891, name changed to Hopland and is still open. Sanel had two CDSs, California Town Postmarks 1850 - 1935 catalogs them as Men-3480 used Jul 2 1890 to Dec 16 1890 and the CDS below is Men-3490 but CTP 1850 - 1935 records only Jul 29 1891. The postal card below is 1 month, 2 weeks, and 4 days earlier. Eureka, a matching pair. and Point Arena. California Town Postmarks 1850 - 1935 catalogs this CDS as Men- 3010 with usage from Oct 22 1897 to Jun 11 1907, just like below! |

Good morning, before I get to today, I want to tell the rest of the story of the pair of Advertised and Unclaimed Eureka covers above. They are postmarked with an un-reported post marker. This CDS is larger than the other seven similar markers and is duplexed with Ellipse 51. Around 1902, Eureka used a larger dial, changed the town name width, (less kerning), removed the space between Eureka and Cal., and used a 3-logo slug; month and day, time, and year (in a smaller font) The usage span I have is from Jun 11, 1902 to May 30, 1908. I'm guessing that Hum-1805 main use was as the counter post marker as all the other concurrent post marked were duplexed with a Doremus D cancel. It's use begins after Hum-1800 LKU and runs concurrent with Hum-1810. Four today. Carey, Iaqua, posted 6/12/2015 Ukiah, and Willits, First day of the Fort Bragg - Willits Stage line. edit for spelling |

re Eureka: Caveat: I do not have a copy of the California book, but will note several things: 1. The sequence of handstamps and machines will start/stop independent of each other, with the exception of PO openings/closings and natural disasters hitting a PO. The numbering system might be less confusing with two series for each town. 2. Yes, the handstamp is likely to be kept at/near the counter during public hours. The machine kept in the rear. 3. The D-dials of the Doremus machine (1903-1907) often alternate even/odd years in terms of spacing, consistent with the illustrations in the California book. The "1908 d-dial" is typically a use of the 1907 dial with the last "7" chiseled-out to leave a blank until the new E-dial arrived in the spring of 1908, although Langford seems to indicate that part of the 1907 use in Eureka also lacked the "ones" digit. Year confirmation by other dated marks on the mailpiece would be necessary. At a minimum, it would be useful to have examples from each year of use. Add: here is 1905 use (borrowed from ebay) matching the 1907 dial spacing 4. The Doremus killer was easily removable to insert the "Received" killer, used in some cities. This normal killer could also be inserted inverted or replaced with a new killer of different bar-count (16, 17, 18, or 19, each with slightly different spacing), but these variants require multiple full-length examples to reliably establish types and change dates as measurement can be tricky in the direction of letter movement through the machine. Bottom line, full listings the Doremus machine variants are often more complex than listed in the current literature - including Langford's Doremus book too. |
