Interkosmos was a Soviet space cooperation program founded in 1967 that enabled astronauts from allied countries to participate in space missions. This stamp commemorates the 1978 flight of Soviet cosmonaut Alexei Gubarev and Czechoslovak cosmonaut Vladimír Remek aboard Soyuz 28. Remek became the first person from a country other than the Soviet Union or the United States to travel into space, making the mission a landmark in international space exploration.
Alexei Gubarev and Vladimír Remek, designed by Jozef Balaz, engraved by Milos Ondracek and issued by Czechoslovakia on April 12, 1987 to commemorate the 20th anniversary of Interkosmos program.

A year later, on June 15, 1988, Czechoslovakia issued a sheet with four imperforate copies of the stamp to publicize the Praga '88 stamp exhibition.

To commemorate the first anniversary of the Interkosmos program, Czechoslovakia issued on March 2, 1979 one more oversize stamp shows Soviet cosmonaut Alexei Gubarev and Czechoslovak cosmonaut Vladimir Remek. The stamp designed by Vladimir Kovarik and engraved by Milos Ondracek.
