Minkus Supreme Global Albums (The Big Red Thread)

toss old pages. Not worth the trouble. Have seen too many ruined collections with the owners making a poor choice using old pages.

I have a couple Supremes I've picked up on ebay. It's interesting how the glassine interleaves have turned brown but do provide clearer viewing of the stamps than the newer interleaves. Reminds me of the changes "Westminster" or whatever the name of the glassine envelope maker was. The older glassines are very clear but still slightly brown with age. Then for a while they almost blocked out the image of the stamps. Now the new ones seem more clear but still not as clear as the very old ones. (Of 60 years ago).

I've often wondered if yellowed or browned glassine interleaves are somehow bad for stamps and pages. You're right though, the old ones are easier to see though.

Once pages or glassines become yellow, it's time to toss. Of course it can hurt paper stamps over time.

I've seen two references to 1974 China update in this topic. One was made by @Eric99. Can anyone shed information on when this came out, where it was sourced.

Maybe a picture or two of the pages that were included. I started with a late 60s Supreme Global and supplemented it up through 85 which is what I randomly chose as my stopping point. I painstakingly acquired every supplement and carefully posted them all.

All that said, I have been wanting to find pages or something for the earlier PRC and so far haven't found anything. I don't really want a speciality PRC album. I'm not "that" into it. So I appreciate any info and or ideas on early PRC for minkus WW.

I've been adding to my Minkus holdings recently. I picked up a 1958 edition Master from a. Hipstamp seller. It has Minkus numbers in the spaces, which was a nice surprise.

I also decided to add the Supreme Part 2 pages and placed an order with NOLA Stamp Shop. They must have had the pages in stock as they shipped in a couple days and I received them yesterday. If I recall, the Part 1 pages took a couple weeks because Amos had to print and ship them.

Are two sided pages really that bad? If you add glassine interleaves, you have defeated part of the advantage of 2 sided album pages.

I may buy an old Supreme.

Unless you use mounts instead of hinges, your stamps will embrace and mate with one another. Glassine is a necessary prophylactic.

More and more Minkus Supreme Global Albums are disappearing , less of them are offered used for sale .

There are two issues that cause this decrease in the market place . First a lot of ebay sellers tear these albums apart to sell them as country collections on ebay or other sities . ,if they buy a well stuff collection then they break it down into country lots in a resell . Then comes the issue of collectors cutting down the Global Albums to fit those three ring buyers , this serves the collector two ways .First easier to handle both on a bookcase and on a desk ,another added reason to do this are the page protectors are cheaper in the standard size .

I lucked out a few months ago and purchased some box lots with 10 vol. Minkus Supreme series with a few stamps. However, they used PM mounts with the black glue on the back that sometimes shows through on the back of the pages. Mostly common cheap stamps so not much value but I tried ebay, found a couple of the Supremes however they smelled a bit like mildew. (Wet basements, closed in garages, steam room storage lockers---however non collectors stack their books.) Tried clearing the odor but that's for another post. They are heavy but I like the big blue binders. I need more shelves but where to put them. My wife is a book collector so not much wall space left. Maybe I collect albums rather than stamps!

Stamps in mounts look horrible on closely packed pages such as those in the Minkus albums - too many neurotic collectors with a hinge phobia.

This exact problem is one that I have struggled with as well. When my 1961 (supplemented to 1962) Master Global was without interleaves, it "felt" right in one volume, but I just could not get past the lack of interleaves for stamp safety reasons. Not to mention the album weighs a ton and you risk possible injury every time you lift or slide it out to work on it. I added interleaves to make two heavy albums but then the magic was gone. Does that make sense? In addition, if you use mounts once and awhile, it takes much effort to cut so they fit on the jam-packed pages.

Note that you will have basically the "same" issues with a Harris Citation album as well.

My final conclusion was that I don't like these massive one volume, two-sided albums. But that's just me ...

I migrated all my Minkus pages to Vario 3 ring binders. If I recall I just had to trim the bind side and then repunch using an adjustable hole punch since paper still was not letter size and needed to center punch holes vertically. One needs a 3 ring that is a little taller and wider than the generic 3 ring to minimize trimming.
