An old reference book I own talks about the United States printing some stamps from the Third Bureau Issue using ink with an analine red pigment mixed in, and refers to the stamps so printed as "pink backs" because the analine red bled through the paper.
Obviously, the Canadian stamp pictured in this thread is much older, but is the pink "ghost" on the back an example of the same sort of bleed-through? Or is it merely an offset?
Yes, aniline inks were used in the 2nd Ottawa Printings.

Reminds me of paper chromatography- putting a drop of a solution of various chemicals on a filter paper and watching them separate out into coloured bands. Here, the pink part's migrated to the back of the stamp.
