Do You Have Covers With A Large Dollar Value Of Postage?

Just saw this on e-bay, a part of a package wrapper (possibly from the Bank of Cleveland) with $768.58 in (metered) postage. Have you seen anything with a higher amount of postage/insurance on a single letter or package?

I've seen full sheets of cancelled $5 stamps ($500) that were not on a package and probably used for accumulated postage due payments rather than a single outgoing package. This piece is undated but maybe someone can estimate the date based on the older style of meter on the package.

Even the Hope Diamond package with insured value of a million dollars only had $145.29 in postage and insurance when it was mailed Registered in 1958, so this parcel with $768 postage+insurance must have held quite a substantial sum.

I am busy for few days before I can address how this rates as postage.

My interest is that it was sent as parcel post which cannot be registered, except in very limited and specially approved circumstances.

The Hope Diamond was only a million or so, but registration goes into the millions, fifteen or more.

Also second class matter can have postage of thousands of dollars paid. And, under certain rules, second class matter can be sent as parcel post. At which time there may be no weight limit for the sending as second class mailings have no weight limit, being exempt from the normal 70 lb limit for all other classes.

Great! Glad that you got it, ppg, before someone else scooped it up. I was tempted to buy it because I like unusual things, but perhaps foolishly I decided not. Even that blue P.O. label itself can't be that common.

Two quick comments.

1. $15 million registration, varies by zone with the cost ranging from $710-$2290 so the item shown falls into the low range of registration over one million. As to items over $15 million, the cost is as above, plus some additional amount based on consideration of weigh, space and value.

2. If there is a penalty permit printed on the envelope under the meters, that places the mailing into a rather obscure and little known rating system. When I say unknown, I mean even to normally knowledgeable philatelists. Such an article has been sitting in my pending pool for some years as I slowly add to it. Those obscure rules allow for registration of certain parcel post matter with then can include a combination of postal matter of any class.

As to revcollector, valid US currency must be sent 1st Class and registered. Not so with demonetized US currency. US Gold has also been transported by mail (USPOD) in weights far exceeding the 70lb weight limit per container.
