@littleriverphil - I think that Iowa postmaster gave themselves away as to whether they are reading the postcards when they arrive.

Maybe the postmaster ( or clerk, How large of a town was Hayfield, Iowa?) also collected postcards like Clarence did. (Not even trying for his last name, I can't tell of that's an F or T or Y.)

Two today, one with a day date and the other with no day. Gotta put it somewhere...

Point Arena, addressed to a familiar name (think Salsig cards) this was posted 1/20/2017. But why? Nothing on either side indicates January 20th.

1945 - Manila to Santa Cruz, Manila


A bittersweet commemorative Manila postmark notes the official signing of the Japanese unconditional surrender. Manila suffered the brunt of the Japanese military atrocities in the Philippines.

The Director of Posts catches a memento of the first day of commercial postal service following WWII.

1953 - Alexandria Fiord, Ellesmere Island, N.W.T., Canada to Newport, KY, USA




Because of sea ice condition at the community of Cape Herschel in the fall of 1953, the post office which was established that year took place at an alternate community named Alexandria Fiord. But as they were unable to secure a new hammer postmark, the one intended for use at Cape Herschel was pressed into service. A new hammer arrived in 1954 on the following patrol, with the correct community's name. The postmark on the back of the envelope reads EASTERN ARCTIC PATROL R.M.S.

1950 - Kaur, Gambia to Prestbury, England

An air letter.

1908 - Regina, Saskatchewan, to Guelph, Ontario

The letter caught an east-bound train at Regina, that was travelling between Moose Jaw and Winnipeg. The postmark is a railway post mark (R.P.O.). The letter E, in the postmark, lets one know the direction of the train.

Regarding the Korbel to Hayfield card of Aug 31, there was a comment/reply





An alternate theory is that the Hayfield office still followed the regulations. ... Backstamping mail was still a part of the regulations until May 8, 1913 (as announced in Postal Bulletin #10131 of May 19, 1913), although nearly every large city had already ceased backstamping by this time and virtually every town had ceased backstamping post/postal cards, as this was typically done on the address side as seen on the Korbel/Hayfield card.

1943 - Solomon Islands to Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, USA






A.P.O. 43, in 1943 was operating in the South Pacific war theatre mostly in the Solomon Island and New Guinea. The sender can be forgiven for the manner in which the stamp was affixed as The Andrews Sisters' "Straighten Up and Fly Right", was not released until 1944.

@John Becker & littleriverphil: Mr. John, thanks for the postal information you provided and also the suggestion provided for searching for more information on addressees through find a grave.
As the Hayfield postmark was oriented in the same direction as the upside-down correspondence, I had concluded that could be sufficient evidence that the clerk may have had a moment to read the card. That is what I was suggesting happened there. Hayfield today has a population of 41 persons. I imagine back at the time the card was mailed it was also a small place. I mean, its name denotes the lack of hustle & bustle. That last statement does not mean agricultural life is uneventful as I know it can be, coming from a farming family here in Mindanao.

Re backstamping:
Thinking like a postmaster or clerk with a stack of faced incoming letters to backstamp, I would have the stack face down and postmark them with an upright mark on the back of each, I would then flip each one into a new pile. When a postcard came up, I would would not backstamp the view side but go ahead and flip it into the "done pile" and then apply the mark, which would naturally be upside down. The orientation of the message is a coincidence, imo.

While a postal employee might occasionally read a card, they would never leave a trail of doing so.
