Jerusalem Views On Stamps

A set of six definitive stamps of identical design depicting the Jewish Menorah, the ancient seven-branched candelabrum, was issued by Israel during 2002–2003. The Menorah is the national emblem and coat of arms of the State of Israel.

The stamp tabs reproduce a detail from the stone relief on the Arch of Titus in Rome, erected after the Roman conquest of Judea and the destruction of Jerusalem in AD 70. The relief depicts a procession of Roman legionnaires carrying spoils from the Second Temple, including the Menorah and other sacred Temple vessels.

A very nice set. Such a deeply rooted history.

Teddy Kollek (1911–2007) was an Israeli politician who served as mayor of Jerusalem for 28 years, from 1965 to 1993. As mayor, Kollek played a major role in the development and modernization of Jerusalem, particularly after the city was unified under Israeli control in 1967. He promoted cultural institutions, parks, museums, and public projects, and was closely associated with the establishment and growth of the Israel Museum and the Jerusalem Foundation.
