GUAM
1901
Catalogue number 11, 1899 U.S. postage stamp overprinted.
In 1901, the primary post office on Guam (located in the capital of Agana/Hagåtña) utilized a circular date stamp (cds) cancellation mark that included the historical name Ladrone (specifically inscribed as "GUAM/LADRONE ISL'S.").
The name comes from Islas de los Ladrones ("Islands of Thieves"), a Spanish colonial designation for the Mariana Islands. Because the term was offensive to the indigenous Chamorro population, the postmark was officially discontinued and replaced on April 1, 1903, with an inscription reading "GUAM/ISL. GUAM"
