8 October 1892 - Amoy, China to Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada A registered cover to Henry Hechler. Both Amoy and Hong Kong were opened or ceded to British influence under the same historical moment—the Treaty of Nanking in 1842, which ended the First Opium War and ceded Hong Kong Island to Britain while making Amoy a treaty port for foreign trade. However, Amoy remained Chinese territory with a foreign international settlement, rather than becoming a British colony like Hong Kong. 1942 - St. Pierre & Miquelon to Montreal, Quebec, Canada France Libre illusive overprints 1928 - Aitutaki, N.Z. to Dunedin, New Zealand Aitutaki is an island in the Cook Islands group. There was no report of a hurricane at this time. Was there a sunken vessel? 1945 - Cocos Island to Twickenham, Middlesex, England. The postmark on the Briceland RPPC is cataloged as Hum-2370, recorded usage from Oct 1,1907 to Nov 10, 1909. California Postmaster Compensation (only reported in odd numbered years) for the two towns shows that Garberville ($276.00) was slightly busier than Briceland ($256.00) in 1909. |

22 October 1919 - Berbice Railway, British Guiana to Chicago, Illinois, US. A Montgomery Ward cover dated 22 OCT 19 arriving at the mail order house on Dec. 8 in the afternoon mail. 1960 - Manila, Philippines to Santa Fe, Argentina 1963 - Phnom Penh, Cambodia to Los Angeles, California, US. ** Absence due to 8-day internet outage. Then I had to play catch up with everything else I do online. I expect to use the 11 days of material next year; the Good Lord willing and the creek don't rise. I heard various explanations about the cause of the outage, but I am just glad to be back online again. |
