Mascarons (derived from the French word masque (mask)) refers to architectural decorative elements sculpted in the shape of faces or masks, typically integrated into buildings, especially above doors, windows, and fountains. They are often designed as mythological figures, grotesques, or symbolic characters and serve as ornamental features or even as protective elements believed to ward off evil spirits. I think I never posted Japanese engraved stamps in this thread, so here are four, all about Buddhism. Bodhisattva offering prayers, Byodo-in, Uji, Kyoto Prefecture, issued on March 25, 1977 The statue is one of 52 Bodhisattva figures, Unchukuyo Bosatsu Zo, "Statues of Cloud-Borne Offering Bodhisattvas". They are celestial Bodhisattvas depicted as floating on clouds, playing musical instruments, or holding incense burners as they joyfully offer prayers. They symbolizing the divine welcoming of souls to the Pure Land. Statue of Gakko Bosatsu, Todai-ji Temple, Nara, issued on February 1, 1968. Gakko Bosatsu is the Bodhisattva of Moonlight, often depicted as an attendant to Yakushi Nyorai (the Medicine Buddha). Gakko Bosatsu is paired with Nikko Bosatsu (the Bodhisattva of Sunlight), symbolizing the cosmic forces of the sun and moon that aid in healing and enlightenment. Statue of Seitaka Doji, Kongobu Temple, Mt Koya, Wakayama Prefecture, issued on June 27, 1977. Seitaka Doji is a powerful child-like deity who serves as a fierce protector. He represents strength, discipline, and devotion in the fight against ignorance and evil. He is depicted as a youthful figure, but with a fierce expression and often holds a vajra, thunderbolt weapon, or staff, symbolizing his role in subduing obstacles to enlightenment. Statue of Yakushi, Horyu-ji Temple, issued on January 20, 1989. Yakushi Nyorai, also known as the Medicine Buddha, is a prominent Buddhist deity associated with healing, medicine, and longevity. Devotees pray to Yakushi Nyorai for recovery from illness, protection from disease, and overall well-being. He is depicted performing the gesture of reassurance with his right hand. |
