Here is an image of a stamp depicting Russian aviator (or mechanic?, note wrench) and French aviator shaking hands, plus some Russian-built Yakovlev Yak-3 fighter aircraft, designed and engraved by Pierre Gandon, and issued by France on October 18, 1969 to honor the French aviators of the Normandie-Niemen (aka Normandy-Neman) Squadron of the Free French Air Force who fought on the Russian front, 1942-45, Scott No. 1253, Y&T No. 1606. Historical note: Marcel Albert (1917-2010), the official top-scoring World War II French ace, who flew the Yak-3 in the USSR with the Normandie-Niemen Squadron and was made a Hero of the Soviet Union, considered it a superior aircraft to the P-51D Mustang and the Supermarine Spitfire. - nethryk |

Got this Petlyakov Pe-2 on a recent postcard from Russia. From the same excellent 2011 series as that Yak-3, above. The Pe-2 was an exceptional WWII-era dive-bomber. P.S. A longtime lurker, this thread got me to join and post. It's nice to see so many excellent military aircraft stamps. |
