I use duplicate stamps I have accumulated for mailing ebay items I've sold and was wondering if it is acceptable to use old air mail stamps for mailing letters today?

Airmail stamps are still valid for postage.

In the U.S. - yes. As long as the current postal rate is covered, you are okay. Of course, the USPS wouldn't mind if you overpay!

i bet close to half the letters I get from stamp collectors are paid partially by airmail stamps..trying to find some covers I received that went through the mail using old special delivery stamps etc; I could start a quirky topical collection of them !

The reason Philb mentioned the special delivery stamps is because they are NOT valid for use as US postage today.
