The Hadendoa ("Hadendowa") are a nomadic subdivision of the Beja people whose elaborate hairdressing gained them the nickname of "Fuzzy-wuzzies" among the British troops during the Mahdist War (1881-99). Here is an image of a stamp depicting a Hadendoa man, designed by Col. W.L. Atkinson, printed by typography (letterpress) by Thomas De La Rue & Co., Ltd., and issued for use in Sudan on September 1, 1951, Scott No. 103, plus an image of a photo of a Hadendoa nomad, and a link to a webpage featuring Rudyard Kipling's famous poem Fuzzy Wuzzy (1892), a stirring tribute to the martial qualities of the Hadendoa warriors: http://allpoetry.com/Fuzzy-Wuzzy- nethryk |
