Nells250 - Bumping your old thread with answers to the questions asked:

Scrapes are caused by machine rollers turning faster than the letter is moving, which is done to accelerate the letter from rest up to machine speed, or in the scrubbing process, which only allows one letter into the machine at a time. Each letter needs a gap between it for jam detection. Check out the video below.

Could be. Machines are hardware. Hardware gets physical. They will always rough up pretty paper letters and stamps!
