So who else has been hit by the marker monkeys or had a destroyed item by the post office? I have gathered quite a few so thought I would see who else has this been done to.
I know this will probaly light a match to start the fire so don't go to hard on them.

Yes, all of the sheets were zapped by the monkey on this package.

I have never even seen this before. How stupid can you be? Or is lazy the word......didn't want to take the time to cancel all the stamps.

I have a few but I will not yell at the post office about the cancellations. They are just ding their job and I can't blame them for taking the marker to a large group of stamps. They canceled the stamps and that is part of their job.

It is only us collectors that have a problem with it, but then again if we ran the post office they would still be doing things the way they did it in the 1800's.

I do get more damaged stamps when people place them on the back of the envelope though.

Well if they really followed the regulations. Maybe it needs to be more defined.

164.22 Cooperation With Collectors

164.221 Clear and Legible Postmarks. Employees should strive to furnish clear and
legible postmarks to stamp collectors by ensuring that cancellation machines and hand-stamp
devices are properly inked. Postal employees must give special attention to mail bearing an
endorsement of philatelic value or to requests for light cancellations and should avoid canceling
stamps by pen or illegible smudging; however, stamps must be canceled sufficiently to protect
postal revenue.

164.222 Covers in Mailstream. The Postal Service cannot provide special attention to a
philatelic cover if it is routinely entered into the mailstream by the sender.

164.223 Postmarking Devices. Postmarking devices may be used only under the
supervision of authorized postal personnel, except that contractors who are working under an
active contract with the USPS to cancel stamps also may use postmarking devices when and in
the manner authorized by the contract.

164.224 Hand-Stamped Postmarks. All hand-stamped postmarks must be made with
black ink, unless the customer specifically indicates a preference for the color otherwise in use.

164.225 Handling. Employees should exercise care in handling all philatelic covers to
ensure that they are not damaged in mailhandling. These covers are generally identifiable by a
design printed on the left side of the envelope. Postal employees should ensure that philatelic
covers are not overcanceled, backstamped, marked "received this date," or otherwise defaced on
front or back; used as a top piece in a bundle for destination package for labeling purposes; or
bent, folded, mutilated, or damaged by rubber bands.

At least they missed the meter on this one.

I recognize the handiwork on this second one. Did both these pieces originate at the same location?

What an awful thing to do

I Also hate when Packing tape is slapped on on top of the stamps. I had that happen on some nice polar bear stamps earlier this year.

Dianne, try the good old Ronsonol or your favorite brand of lighter fuel on scotch tape, packaging tape, and sticky labels stuck onto stamps!

I have the opposite problem. The last three (3) multi-stamp packages I have received have not had any cancellations. Two were from the U.S. and one from Canada.

That is true. I also received some letters or packages lately where the stamps have not been cancelled. Nevertheless, the post office should probably do a better job in orienting their employees on how to properly cancel stamps.

Warm water sometimes works with celophane tape. What is really ugly when the marker is water soluble and it ends up staining the whole batch that you are soaking!

The postmark was light so the postoffice used a marker to darken it thus ruining the stamp

Hi Johnstamp
I do not think that the stamp was marked over.
you will notice that the whole second cancel is heavier,
notable the "code" within the circle.
The Clerk probably saw the light ink then re inked the canceler.
