The Scythians were a group of Iranian and Eurasian nomads who lived in a large area from modern Kazakhstan to Ukraine during 9 to 1 Century B.C. The Scythians worked in a wide variety of materials such as gold, wood, leather, bone, bronze, iron, and silver. Many Scythian artifacts were found in tombs in southern Ukraine. The gold objects showcased in this stamp set are dated at 4 to 5 Century B.C.

Tutankhamun's gold mask
The mask weighs ten kilograms and measures 54 cm in height and 39.3 cm in width. It is made of gold which is inlaid with semi-precious stones, colored glass paste and the eyes are made with obsidian and quartz. The back of the mask is chased with a series of spells and texts from the Book of the Dead. The mask was placed directly on the mummy of King Tutankhamun inside the third coffin housed in the sarcophagus.

Cusco, a city in the Peruvian Andes, was once capital of the Inca empire, and is now known for its archaeological remains. In 1983 Cusco was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
The stamp design features an Inca gold artifact found in Cusco.
