Lord Kenneth Clark's book "The Nude: a Study in Ideal Form" makes the distinction in his introduction between the naked body and the nude – "to be naked is to be deprived of clothes, and implies embarrassment and shame, while a nude, as a work of art, has no such connotations."

This being stated let us venture into the artistic aspect of the Nude as a potential Topical Collection - Let's show some skin (tastefully mind you).

Here's some from my collection…

It's pretty scary how quickly a situation can be changed from 'nude' to 'naked'. Michelangelo, Sistine Chapel, photo of the ceiling. (Hi Stampalo, this could be a fun topic. K.)

I know the Pope was displeased and forced Michelangelo to cover them up!

Some of Michelangelo's nudes were altered--I think only in the "Last Judgment"--and only after his death. I don't think the artist would have stood for it.

I'm reviving this thread from 2015 because there are many stamps depicting nudes or nude art. The human form is commonly celebrated in art. I'll share some of my collection, and I hope others will do the same. First up:

Hungry 1981 showing Picasso's La Toilette. Souvenir sheet, MNH.

On September 5, 1997 Finland issued a "Pro Philatelia" (surcharge for the promotion of Philately) booklet (Facit #H38) featuring a triptych painted by Akseli Gallen-Kallela (1865-1931). Each of the 3 stamps of the booklet pane is a panel of the triptych. Painting shows "The Aino Saga, triptych with motif from the national epic The Kalevala" (Facit).

Here from 1957 is a French issue celebrating (a year late) the bicentennial of Sevres porcelain. Yvert 1094, Sc.820. Pierre Munier designed and engraved the stamp. The statue depicted is Falconet's "La Baigneuse."

And also from France, marking the 1961 centennial of the birth of sculptor Aristide Maillol.
Y 1281 Sc. 984 is his "Méditerranée" also known as "la Pensée," although when first exhibited in 1905 it was simply "Femme." Stamp designed and engraved by Decaris.
