500 Years of the Oldest Globe
September 10, 1992
Martin Behaim (1459 – 1507) was a German mariner, artist, astronomer, philosopher, geographer, and explorer in service to King John II. He is best known for his Erdapfel (the Earth apple), the world's oldest surviving globe. The globe is preserved in the German National Museum in Nuremberg.

Here is an Austrian globe stamp issued in 1977
for the 5th Meeting of Coronelli World Federation.

Vincenzo Coronelli (August 16, 1650 – December 9, 1718) was a Franciscan friar, cosmographer, cartographer, publisher,
and encyclopedist known in particular for his atlases and globes.

One of the six stamps shows the Celestial Globe by Anders Akerman in 1759.
Anders Akerman (1721 - 1778) was the father of globemaking in Sweden, producing his first globes in 1759.

The Globes of Coronelli
February 11, 2008
Vincenzo Coronelli (1650 - 1718) was a Franciscan friar, cosmographer, cartographer, publisher, and encyclopedist known in particular for his atlases and globes. His Terrestrial and Celestial Globes made for Louis XIV are dated 1688 and 1693. These globes measure 384 cm in diameter.

Peter Anich (1723-1766) was an Austrian cartographer and maker of mathematical instruments. His works, particularly the 1772 published Atlas Tyrolensis, are among the most accurate maps of their time.
The commemorative stamp shows a portrait of Peter Anich with maps, books and a globe in the background.

Gerard Mercator
April 14, 1962
Gerardus Mercator (1512 - 1594) was a cartographer, philosopher and mathematician. He is best known for his work in cartography, in particular the world map of 1569 based on a new projection which represented sailing courses of constant bearing as straight lines. He was the first to use the term "atlas" for a collection of maps.
The commemorative stamp portrays Mercator in front of a globe.

The sheet commemorates Gerard Mercator (1512 - 1594) and Jodocus Hondius (1563 - 1612). Hondius was best known for his early maps of the New World and Europe and for re-establishing the reputation of the work of Gerard Mercator.

Orbis Pictus is a textbook for children written by Czech educator John Amos Comenius (1592-1670) and published in 1658 as an encyclopedia and picture book intended for children. Here is an image of a stamp depicting a globe with illustrations from Orbis Pictus, designed by Czech artist Petr Melan (1947- ), combined engraved by Vaclav Fajt (1952- ) and photogravure, and issued by Czech Republic on March 19, 2008 to commemorate the 350th anniversary of the book's publication.
