I came across this neat little world stamp album promotion that was marketed to kids in 1935 via a "Captain Tim character who had served in the British Intelligence Department (or Secret Service) during WWI.

I assume some folks like to collect such historical publications. But I wonder if this 128-page booklet might have more interest and value to collectors of sponsored advertising.

Any ideas??

dcaraz1949, it might help a bit if you could show the inside of the book? I for one have never seen this!

Here's a bit more...

The interior 124 pages have spaces and stamp reproductions from Abyssinia to Zululand. Small trim size pages are 6.75" w X 9.5" h so number of stamp positions is limited, but this is a small stamp collecting album -- and it has some hinged stamps mounted.

Here's another of the Captain Tim stamp albums (It is the 1935 edition):

And, if you're going to join the Captain Tim's Ivory Stamp Club, you have to have your membership pin:

Hold on!
Chipg, comes through with the Member Pin!

And I misspoke...my version is the 1934 issue; not 1935.
Published by H. E. Harris.

Here's the interior stamp layout:

Capt Tim albums are frequently offered on eBay in a wide range of prices.

I have a couple of them, a pin, and a cover that apparently carried a welcome letter and membership card.

Now looking for a membership card. Does anyone have one? If so, would you post an image to see what they look like?

Don

Captain Tim rides again! Thanks for all the shared info!

I missed out on Cat. Tim's Club, but I will always fondly remember those years when I would join an "exclusive" club, or mail away for a "bargain grab bag" of exotic stamps from around the world. I was a young kid living in Central Florida's cattle country on a Rural Free Delivery Route outside a small quiet town that at the time in the 1960's didn't yet have an airport.

Man, it was Nirvana when the post man drove up and stuffed a approvals stamps packet into our mail box. Only the mailman drove an English-style mail delivery car with the steering wheel on the right side so he could easily reach the mail boxes along side the two-lane blacktop road.

Of course, the Capt. Tim Club was part of the radioland culture with Ivory Soap reaching millions of families.

Here is a 3rd variant album cover, copyright 1934 by H.E. Harris. Gotta love the irony that the mailing envelope for a stamp album was franked with a permit!

A few years ago I asked a friend who is an audio archivist to see if he could locate any surviving recordings of the Ivory Stamp Club broadcasts, but he couldn't. Nor have I been able to find any transcripts of the broadcasts. If anyone has, I would love to know.

So, Captain Tim was of the Healy clan! My brother-in-law is a Healy; maybe related?
Anyone know if the good Captain was an actor hired for the radio and stamp Club?
Or might he have actually been a former British Intelligence Officer?

Shades of my favorite Brit TV series: MI5!

Here's a terrific article that explains much about the stamp club which evidently was the brain child of the founder of the H.E. Harris stamp company.

http://articles.mcall.com/2008-03-2...s-ivory-soap

Another article indicated two very interesting things about Captain Tim Healy --
1) that he had been an Australian military officer (I'm still unsure if his stamp/Ivory character was mostly fictional acting);
2) and he served as president of the New York Public Library prior to his death at age 69.

Question: would it be possible to make pre-teen kids more interested in stamps if they also had opportunities to make international friends they could text and communicate with, or even visit?

Seems to me that our hobby could benefit today from another jolt of creative marketing similar to the inventiveness that Mr Harris exhibited in the mid-1930's.

How about the Internet Buddy Stamp Club sponsored by APS and Apple?
> Target audience: pre-teen Kids receiving an iPAD or iPHONE
> Offer from Apple: sign up free to join and access online members-only Internet Buddy Stamp Club where they can "meet" other kids from around the nation and the world. Kids can share texting contacts with others who enjoy sharing and swapping scans of their collections, and actual stamp swapping via postal deliveries.
> Stamp collecting classes can be delivered as live webinars, or short videos.
> Club trips to stamp shows can be offered with adult collectors as chaperons.
> Starter Package deals can be negotiated with dealers and manufacturers.
> Awards could be offered for real enthusiasts.
