The name Laja is Spanish for a flagstone, and comes from the name of a type of flat sedimentary rock

FINLAND 1978

Paimio Sanatorium (Finnish: Paimion parantola) is a former tuberculosis sanatorium in Paimio, Southwest Finland, designed by Finnish architect Alvar Aalto (1898-1976).
Aalto received the design commission having won the architectural competition for the project held in 1929.
The building was completed in 1933, and soon after received critical acclaim both in Finland and abroad.

The Central House of the Federico Santa María Technical University is the main campus of the university, located in Valparaíso, Chile.
It was designed by architects José Smith Miller and Josué Smith Solar (father and son), and was inaugurated in 1931.
The University is dedicated to careers in Engineering, Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics, Construction and Architecture.

This stamp is one half of a 1955 series celebrating the opening of the Hotel Tequendama in Bogotá, Colombia.

The opening the hotel was the eventual result of a breakfast shared between Franklin D. Roosevelt and Juan Trippe, who was the president of Pan American Airways at the time.

The stamp was issued in 1955, but ten years earlier in 1945, FDR and Trippe were talking through ideas to aid development in Latin America. They discussed the need to attract tourists and businesses, and figured luxury hotels would be a way to do it.

Shortly after their meeting, Trippe tried to get in touch with hotel execs to partner with to bring the idea to life, but nobody was interested. Roosevelt then suggested that Pan Am should take the lead, but lacking the funds to do so, Pan Am secured a loan from the Export-Import Bank of the United States and started a subsidiary that would soon be called Intercontinental Hotels Corporation. Pan Am held a 100% stake.

Intercontinental then got to work scouting locations in Latin America for its hotels. In 1949 it took over operations at its first location, the Hotel Grande in Brazil, and then in 1950 it assumed control of Hotel Carrera in Chile. They continued in this way for a while until their pattern of leasing existing properties was broken in 1953 when the Hotel Tequendama was opened.

The new hotel in Bogotá was the first one to be completely planned and built by Intercontinental, and the inaugural banquet was attended by Colombia's sitting president. It was the largest hotel on the continent and the tallest building in the city for a time in the 1950s, and it's still considered a national monument.

The present-day complex was constructed in the 14th century. Renovations took place between late 19th and early 20th century.
